Four new boats to strengthen Climate resilience in Bougainville atolls

BUKA, 12 AUGUST 2026 (PNG GOVT/ABG GOVT)—Four new 32-foot passenger boats have been handed over to the Autonomous Bougainville Government to improve transport and access to essential services for some of Bougainville’s most climate-vulnerable atoll communities. The boats were officially launched and handed over today at Kuri Lodge in Buka by the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA), in partnership with the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG), under the Building Resilience to Climate Change (BRCC) Project. The vessels will serve communities in the Fead atoll in Nuguria, Carterets atoll in Tuloun, Mortlock atoll in Takuu and Tasman atoll in Amotu. The boats are expected to provide safer and more reliable transportation for people, essential goods and services between the remote island communities. The initiative is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and implemented by the CCDA. It is aimed at strengthening climate resilience and connectivity while supporting sustainable livelihoods in communities increasingly affected by climate change and sea-level rise. The handover marks another step in Papua New Guinea’s efforts to provide practical climate adaptation measures for vulnerable communities. The BRCC Project is being implemented through partnerships involving national and regional governments, development partners and local communities, with a focus on delivering climate adaptation measures that strengthen resilience and improve living conditions in Bougainville’s remote atoll communities…..PACNEWS
