FFA steps up support for PNG Tuna industry as EU market rules tighten

PORT MORESBY, 12 AUGUST 2026 (PACNEWS/FFA)—The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) has stepped up technical support for Papua New Guinea’s tuna industry as it prepares for tighter European Union food safety and market access requirements. The FFA Market Access Team completed a technical mission to PNG from 28 July to 7 August 2026, working with the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and tuna industry to prepare for the evolving EU requirements. The mission brought together 30 participants, equally split between women and men, from the NFA and PNG’s tuna industry. A key focus was Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/1449, with discussions covering its practical implementation, implications for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems, and new EU requirements for monitoring Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). Across Lae, Wewak and Madang, the FFA team conducted technical training, held discussions with the NFA, visited EU-listed processing establishments and engaged directly with tuna industry representatives. The mission strengthened understanding of the new requirements and helped identify areas where further technical assistance may be needed. These include PFAS risk assessment and monitoring, food safety standards, capacity building and industry innovation. FFA said the level of engagement during the mission reflected the strong partnership between the agency, the NFA and PNG’s tuna industry. The cooperation is aimed at helping PNG maintain access to the European market while strengthening the competitiveness of the Pacific tuna sector…..PACNEWS
