Project Site: Tolokiwa Island, Tewei Siassi District, Morobe Province PNG
Overview
Tolokiwa Island is Located between Long Island and Umboi Island, Lokep Island is part of the Siassi Islands. The island spans 7 km in diameter and covers an area of 46 km² (ref: Wikimapia), with an estimated population of 1,500 to 2,000 people. Despite its rich natural beauty, the island’s geographical isolation has been a significant barrier to essential services, including telecommunication, clean water supply, education, and healthcare. Among these, the most pressing challenge is communication. Currently, the island has no cellular tower or radio frequencies, and the only means of receiving information is through outboard motor traveling to and from the mainland Siassi (Umboi Island). This communication gap has had a severe impact on health and education operations, leaving the island’s residents cut off from timely information and support. The Combris project aims to address these critical issues and bring much-needed infrastructure to the island, improving the lives of its residents.
